Potterton Tattler RS46 floor standing boiler service in Barnes SW13.
Now this is an old one, which were discontinued in 1979. So please the client kept the manual and the data badge was in good condition.
All on the readings at the meter and boiler checked out, so despite its age it was in good working order and safe to work on. Hurray!
The boiler service would include cleaning out the flue, cleaning the heat exchanger, checking the safety devices and changing the thermocouple.
There was a lot of debris in the flue from some previous work so I have to take off the terminal grill and dislodge the cement. This could lead if unchecked starvation of oxygen to the main burner. This in turn will cause the main burner to produce more Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Certainly harmful to the environment but if allowed to come into the property dangerous to the occupants. As a safety precaution I installed a CO alarm where none were previously.
After the outside terminal was cleaned, I dismantled the internal parts of the flue to clean which also gave access to the heat exchanger which was then cleaned. New glass rope seals and reassembled.
The thermocouple safety device was then changed and checked, with the main burner chamber cleaned. Again new glass rope seals and reassembled.
The boiler was then checked and we are ready for the winter!
The Central Heating was then checked and found that the feed and expansion tank was bone dry. It had a stuck gate valve which was changed, tank filled and central heating is now back to its usual self.
